Date: 120,000-90,000 years old
Location: Mount Carmel, Israel
Species: near-modern human
Discovered by: Garrod and McCown
Date of Discovery: 1939
Details: A total of at least 16 individuals were unearthed at Skhul Cave in Israel. The Skhul specimens are highly variable in both the degree of primitive features expressed (e.g. overall robustness of the skull, pronounced prognathism, large teeth and strong brow ridges) and more anatomically modern features (e.g. rounded occipital and inflated parietal lobes and a more pronounced chin). The robustness of the specimens initially led some academics to assign them to the Neanderthal taxonomic category whereas others believe the presence of modern traits makes "near-modern Homo sapiens" a more accurate classification. |
